Significant Others

Artist Lee Brozgol pictured with his work “Significant Others,” commissioned by Painted Bride Art Center in October 1982.

This wild audience of eclectic hand-drawn portraits is made up of family, friends, neighbors and co-workers. As Brozgol said with characteristic verve, “All the wonderful people, and not so wonderful people who have enriched my life.”

Brozgol was always fascinated by the dynamic between audience members and performers, voyeur and active participant, the blurred lines between theater and “real life.”

Brozgol created this intricate and larger-than-himself group of spectators as both homage to humanity and immersive art experience.

As guests viewed the portraits, each brimming with individuality and personal detail, but also comprising one mass and range of human emotions, it became hard to tell who was the viewer and who was art.
